10 things to do this Family Day weekend
February 13, 2018Looking for some Family Day weekend fun in Cornwall? From theatre and arts to hockey and old-fashioned family fun, there’s something for everyone!
Make sure to check out these fun events. Better yet, invite some friends and family from outside of Cornwall to join you and let them discover all we have to offer!
Family Fun
1 Winter Wonderland
Experience Lamoureux Park in a whole new way with free horse-drawn wagon rides, sponsored by the Optimist Club of Cornwall. The rides run from 3 pm to 7 pm on a first-come, first-serve basis, departing from the splashpad area in Lamoureux Park. The MockTails concession stand will also be open serving their unique pastry treat and hot drinks. Thousands have already enjoyed the activity – don’t miss out!
Bring your sleds and enjoy the tobogganing hill next to the splashpad at the same time!

2 A Countryside Adventure
Bring the family to one of the area’s coolest new attractions – Countryside Adventures in Moose Creek! There’s a 3 km ice skating trail in the woods, a 1.5 km snowshoeing trail, a small hill with crazy carpets, bonfire, hot chocolate and lots more.
There’s a special Family Day weekend promotion – starting Friday morning and ending Monday night, take advantage of a family price of 38$ for 2 adults and 2 children. Weekend hours are 10 am to 10 pm Friday and Saturday and 10 am to 8 pm Sunday and.

3 Follow the Trail
The Friends of the Summerstown Trails will be hosting their annual Family Day activities at the Summerstown Forest on Monday from 10am to 4pm. Enjoy the trails and other outdoor fun activities. There will be free XC ski and snowshoe rentals for families throughout the day along with other free activities and food. The trails are located on Summerstown Road, 1.6 km north of exit 804 of the 401.

4 Build Some Memories
Stop by the Cornwall Public Library on Monday and let your child’s imagination take over at the Lego Club! Create, build and have fun with others! The drop-in program runs from 4 pm to 5 pm and it’s open to children ages 6 to 12. It’s one of many Family Day activities taking place at the Library.

Local Theatre
5 A Beautiful Time
The curtain is set to rise on the Seaway Valley Theatre Company’s most lavish production yet – Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The major musical production features nearly four dozen of Cornwall’s best-known stage actors.
“Our rehearsals are now on the big stage. We are so excited to finally be dressed in costume, dancing on sets and singing under the lights. This show is going to be spectacular,” said Director Lesley Ellam.
The family-oriented production kicks off on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm. Two matinées will also be performed, on Sunday and Monday, at 1:30 pm.

6 Celebrate V-Day
On Saturday, at 6pm, V-Day Cornwall will present a one-night only benefit reading of Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues at The Best Western Parkway Inn & Conference Centre. There’s a 3-course meal starting at 6 pm followed by the show at 8 pm.
It’s been almost 20 years since V-Day was founded, since Eve Ensler’s play The Vagina Monologues shattered taboos, sharing the stories of women as they had never been told before.

7 Some Sweet Workshops
Unleash your inner artist with some unique workshops at Cornwall’s art studios! OBO Studios is offering a Riley’s Bakery inspired Let Them Eat Cake Painting Workshop on Saturday from 1 pm to 5 pm. For more info on this sweet workshop, click here.
Meanwhile, Cailuan Gallery is launching a Beginners Landscape Painting Course on Saturday. Learn about colour, composition, perspective and design. The six-week course is lead by Libby Cameron. For more info, click here.
8 A Foreign Experience
The Port Theatre will be rocking on Saturday night with an awesome tribute to the music of Foreigner, Double Vision. Doors open at 7 pm for this all-ages, licenced event. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

Sports
9 Nationals on the Prowl
The Cornwall Nationals return home for a two-game home stand starting on Friday night against the Port Huron Prowlers (8:30 pm start) at the Civic Complex. The team is back in action Saturday night when the North Shore Knights visit (7:30 pm start). Come check out pro hockey right in your own backyard!
10 Race Like A Colt
The Cornwall Colts have their fourth annual Family Day game on Monday, taking on the Hawkesbury Hawks at 3 pm at the Cornwall Civic Complex. Enjoy some great hockey action and then take to the ice afterwards to skate with your favourite Colts player!
