Big Ben returns for another season of winter fun
January 13, 2022Escape the city within the city at Big Ben Ski Centre.
Located on Seventh Street West directly across from the Benson Centre, Big Ben is a special place for many residents and visitors alike. Now open for the 2022 season, the hill is one of Cornwall’s best winter gems.
A beginner’s hill at first glance, it is the atmosphere and memories created here that make the centre so much more. Generations of families have learned to hone their skills here. It is a cycle that continues to pay itself forward today, adding a chapter to its story each winter season.
Using snow guns to create a solid base as soon as the mercury drops, Big Ben’s work starts early to ensure its season lasts longer. Snow grooming is done regularly to provide the best possible conditions for skiers and snowboarders to thrive.
Equipped with a wire cable lift with tow handle, patrons of all ages will have the opportunity to learn the trade of safely navigating all aspects of the hill. Thrill seekers looking for more of a challenge will enjoy the terrain park that includes an assortment of box rails, obstacles and a tabletop jump that has played host to many big air competitions of the past.
New additions to the hill this year have already made a big impact on the overall Big Ben experience. “Woods run” has been created and unveiled this season to give Big Ben its very own Black Diamond trail. A seating area with Adirondack chairs and a firepit have been welcomed additions for those looking to relax, warmup or enjoy a warm beverage from the snack bar. Skating is now accessible at the hill as a 55-foot by 85-foot rink with boards is on site for all visitors to the Centre. A new roadside sign will soon be the latest upgrade to the hill, a well-deserved addition for locals and visitors to enjoy.
While group lessons for the 2022 season have been put on hold do to self-distancing regulations, private lessons are available at the beginner and Intermediate levels. Private lessons run in 45-minute blocks for $30 with each additional child costing $15. A maximum of 3 participants can be accommodated per group.
Big Ben is open Tuesday to Friday from 5 pm to 9 pm for those looking to take some runs under the lights. Weeknight tickets are $8. Saturday and Sunday hours of operation are from 10 am to 5 pm. Weekend tickets are $10 each with half day passes available for $5.
Big Ben truly is a local treasure that deserves a look. Limitations and restrictions aside, the winter season can take a tole on our physical and mental health. Big Ben has it all!
