Cornwall golf courses usher in new season

After a long and trying winter, spring has finally arrived in Cornwall – and so too has golf season.
The first swings have already taken place at the city’s popular golf courses in the lead-up to what is sure to be another busy season.
“The golf course is in fantastic shape for this time of the year,” said Rory MacLennan, proprietor at Summerheights Golf Links, the popular 36-hole facility on South Branch Road. “It came through the winter really well, with virtually no winter damage.”
The MacLennan Course at Summerheights opened on Wednesday while the Matheson Course followed on Friday – and there’s been no shortage of interest.
“The (opening) weekend is full. If you don’t have a tee time by now it might be difficult to get one,” added Mr. MacLennan.
Golf courses and driving ranges have been permitted to remain open in the Ontario Government’s latest stay-at-home pandemic order, and Mr. MacLennan said they feel privileged to be able to continue operating during this difficult time. Dating back to last season, the golf course has implemented numerous safety standards and service changes in order to ensure the safety of patrons and staff while enjoying the links.
We’re in a fortunate situation and we really need golfers to continue to follow our protocols,” he added. “It’s now more important than ever to show golf courses can be a safe outdoor activity.”
To that end, golfers are asked to wear a mask whenever they are not on the actual course and to depart promptly at the end of their round. There are no gatherings on the premises and golfers sharing carts will be asked to wear a mask if they are not from the same household.
Golfers must also have a tee time in advance. It can be booked online or by calling the pro shop (613-938-8009).
For those seeking a shorter round, Archie’s has also opened for the season with its popular driving range, Par 3 course and mini-putt.
“The course is looking beautiful,” said Archie’s owner Carol Ann Baxter. “We are feeling extremely relieved to be able to continue to offer socially distanced outdoor exercise to our community.”
Like Summerheights, Archie’s has also implemented additional safety measures in light of the pandemic. Masks are required on all parts of the premises with the exception of the driving mats and the Par 3 course. Gatherings are not permitted and to manage traffic flow, patrons may be asked to wait in their vehicle until called.
The popular ice cream stand at the Vincent Massey Drive establishment is not yet open for the season however it’s expected to open later this month.
