Cornwall Motor Speedway revving up for 2018 race season
April 18, 2018How best to describe the experience of Sunday night racing at the Cornwall Motor Speedway? Track co-owner and promoter Raymond Lavergne does a pretty job of it.
“It’s the adrenaline, the action, the speed,” he said.
Mr. Lavergne’s passion for the Speedway is shared by thousands of race fans who make the weekly trek to the quarter-mile track during the spring and summer months, making it one of Cornwall’s largest attractions. It’s a ritual that dates back decades – the Speedway opened in 1970 – and it draws fans from all over.
“There are a lot of people who travel two or three hours to come for every (race) night in Cornwall,” added Mr. Lavergne.
The ritual will be revived once again when the flag drops on the 2018 race season in May. The schedule is now set and there are a number of big nights on tap, including the O’Canada 100 Super DIRTcar Big Block Series on Canada, Sunday, July 1st.
The calendar lined up perfectly for Canada Day racing at the Speedway and it promises to be a fun night.
“It will be a big hit for us for sure,” said Mr. Lavergne.
Another big race night will follow on Thursday, July 12th with the Race for the Cure 150 – and a $12,000 prize – along with 50-lap Sportsman, 25-lap Pro-Stock and Eastern Ontario Vintage Club features.
The action gets underway on Memorial Day weekend with back-to-back race programs on May 20th and May 21st and continues through Labour Day before winding up with the popular Fireball Enduro on September 9th.
“The long weekend shows are always big,” Mr. Lavergne said.

The Speedway has undergone significant enhancements in recent years with new seating and equipment along with other improvements. It’s a good sign for the thousands who make it a second home – and those who are looking for a new experience.
“It’s like the price of a movie but with us you get a show that’s three hours,” he added. “There’s always action on the track. You get your money’s worth.”
