Hundreds of cycle tourists ride through Cornwall

Waterfront Trail

Cornwall’s stretch of the Waterfront Trail will be put to good use on Thursday, August 2nd as hundreds of cycle tourists ride into the City on two separate tours.

First up is the PWA’s Friends For Life Bike Rally – a 600 km, 6-day or 110 km, 1-day cycling event that departed Toronto on Sunday, July 29th. The group of 400 cyclists and crew will arrive in Cornwall in the afternoon and take a break at the Cornwall Aquatic Centre, overlooking the beautiful St. Lawrence River.

“One of the things that inspires our riders is knowing that there are people in local communities supporting and cheering for us along the way,” said Billy Axelrod, Co-Lead of Community Engagement for the Bike Rally.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event, which is on target to raise over $1.3 million. It’s the sustaining fundraiser for the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA) – the largest direct support service agency of its kind in Canada for people living with HIV/AIDS.

The participants will be sharing the trail with cyclists on another tour, the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure. A moving celebration of the Waterfront Trail, the tour will see 170 cycle tourists from Canada and the US arrive in Cornwall as part of a larger trek from Ajax to the Quebec border. Along with exploring the area, the group will spend the night at the NAV CENTRE in Cornwall and enjoy a breakfast before departing on the final leg of their trip.

Now in its 11th year, the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure is a fully supported cycling holiday showcasing communities connected by the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail.

About the Waterfront Trail
Stretching over 3,000 km, the Waterfront Trail is a route connecting 140 communities and First Nations along the Canadian shores of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. The trail consists of both on-road and off-road facilities.

Cornwall’s section of the Waterfront Trail is a dedicated multi-use trail that spans the entire waterfront, offering stunning views of the Cornwall Canal and St. Lawrence River – completely off-road. The Trail connects a number of attractions including the OPG Visitor Centre, Cornwall Community Museum, Lamoureux Park and the Aquatic Centre. Free parking is available at the Cornwall Civic Complex for trail users.

Sentier Waterfront

Le jeudi 2 août, le tronçon de Cornwall du sentier Waterfront servira à une bonne cause alors que des centaines de cyclotouristes sillonneront la ville en participant à deux randonnées cyclistes distinctes.

La première est le Rallye cycliste de PWA, qui consiste à parcourir 600 km en 6 jours, ou 110 km en une seule journée, et qui commence à Toronto le dimanche 29 juillet. Un groupe de 400 cyclistes et l’équipe de soutien arriveront à Cornwall dans l’après-midi et feront une pause au Centre aquatique de Cornwall en admirant le majestueux fleuve Saint-Laurent.

Billy Axelrod, codirecteur de la participation communautaire du Rallye cycliste explique que ce qui motive les cyclistes, c’est entre autres de savoir que tout le long du parcours, il y a des membres de la collectivité locale qui les soutiennent et les encouragent.

Cette année, la 20^e édition de ce rallye vise à recueillir plus de 1,3 million de dollars. La collecte de fonds est organisée par la Toronto People With AIDS (PWA) Foundation, la plus importante agence de services de soutien aux personnes infectées par le VIH ou atteintes du sida.

Les participants partageront le sentier avec les participants d’une autre randonnée cycliste : la Great Waterfront Trail Adventure.  Cette célébration émouvante du sentier Waterfront réunira 170 touristes à vélo du Canada et des É.-U. Ceux-ci arriveront à  Cornwall après un long parcours entre Ajax et la frontière du Québec. Le groupe explorera la région et passera une nuit au Centre NAV de Cornwall.  Le lendemain, après le petit déjeuner, les cyclistes entameront la dernière partie du circuit.

La Great Waterfront Trail Adventure, dont c’est la 11^e édition cette année, est une randonnée entièrement à vélo permettant de visiter les collectivités reliées par le sentier Waterfront  qui borde les Grands Lacs.

Le sentier Waterfront

Le sentier Waterfront, qui s’étend sur plus de 3 000 km, est une voie reliant 140 collectivités et Premières Nations vivant sur les rives des Grands Lacs et du fleuve Saint-Laurent. Le sentier est constitué de tronçons routiers et de tronçons hors route.

Le tronçon de Cornwall du sentier Waterfront est un sentier riverain polyvalent offrant des vues imprenables du canal de Cornwall et du fleuve Saint-Laurent.  Il s’agit d’un sentier entièrement hors route, reliant certain nombre d’attraits touristiques de Cornwall, dont l’OPG Visitor Centre, le Musée communautaire de Cornwall, le parc Lamoureux et le Centre aquatique. Au Centre municipal de Cornwall, des places de stationnement gratuit sont offertes aux usagers du sentier.
