The Cornwall area’s world-class bass fishing will be in the spotlight this weekend as the Renegade Bass Tour arrives for its 2018 qualifier event.

One of four stops on the 2018 Renegade Bass Tour, the Cornwall qualifier will feature 76 teams of anglers – in pairs – vying for top honours on Saturday, July 7th.

“We have anglers from as far away as Hamilton along with others from Pembroke and Montreal, and some locals as well,” said volunteer organizer Matt Massey. “There will be $4 million worth of boats and motors on the water.”

The anglers will take off from the boat launch in Lamoureux Park at 7 am in search of trophy-worthy bass on Lake St. Francis, a body of water that holds plenty of potential.

“The St. Lawrence River from Kingston to Cornwall is a world-class small mouth (bass) fishery,” said Mr. Massey. “There will be some giant fish weighed in.”

The tournament culminates with the weigh-in at 4 pm at Marina 200 and members of the public are welcome to attend and watch as the winners are crowned. Top honours goes to the team with the best combination of the five biggest fish caught.

“We’ll have a stage set up at the marina and there will be prizes for the kids. It’s always a fun time,” Mr. Massey added.

The qualifier may only be a one-day event but the economic benefits are significant. Many of the teams arrived early and have spent a few days in the area pre-fishing in the lead up to the event, providing significant spin-offs in the form of accommodations, food, fuel and other purchases.
