Sidewalk Astronomy returns to Lamoureux Park

May 2, 2019

Brendan Bronzan is on a mission to get people to look up. Way up.

The self-proclaimed space nerd and solo astronomer has made it a personal mission to get people in urban centres to discover the magic and mystery of the night sky. Through his business Speaking of Space, he brings the universe to their sidewalk – literally.

“I just wanted to put some telescopes in public,” he said of the origins of his business. “I want to bring the night sky to people in the city.”

Mr. Bronzan has experimented with this by putting telescopes in public spaces and hosting free sidewalk astronomy nights.

Last summer, hundreds of residents and visitors had a chance to take in the unique experience right in Lamoureux Park in the heart of Cornwall. Mr. Bronzan held a number of events throughout the summer to rave reviews.

Building on that success, Mr. Bronzan is planning to return with even more events in 2019.

The first Sidewalk Astronomy event of the year is planned for Saturday, May 11th near the bandshell in Lamoureux Park.

From 9:30 pm to 12 am, telescopes will be set up for free public use. Visitors will be able to explore the Moon visually, take photos with your device and more. Giant projection screens will be set up to highlight the hidden gems of the night sky that only a telescope camera can reveal.

There will also be virtual reality (VR) experiences to let visitors explore the universe without having to leave the ground.

It’s a completely free event and merchandise and collectibles will be available for purchase with proceeds going directly to support Sidewalk Astronomy. Donations are also accepted.

“I just want to get people together and share the night sky,” Mr. Bronzan added.
