Speedway gearing up for golden season
May 19, 2019There are some sure signs of summer in Cornwall – fun festivals in Lamoureux Park, great outdoor experiences like cycling and camping and, of course, the roar of engines at Cornwall Motor Speedway.
Sunday night racinng at the Speedway is a passion that is shared by thousands of race fans who regularly make the trek to the quarter-mile track during the spring and summer months, making it one of Cornwall’s largest attractions.
“There are a lot of people who travel two or three hours to come for every (race) night in Cornwall,” says track co-owner and promoter Raymond Lavergne. “It’s the adrenaline, the action, the speed (that makes it special).”
It’s a ritual that dates back to 1969, making this 50th racing season an extra special one. The ritual will be revving up once again as the flag drops on the 2019 racing season this month.
The home opener is set for Sunday, May 19th (weather permitting) and the action continues through Labour Day before wrapping up with the popular Fireball Enduro on Sunday, September 8th.

Some other big dates to mark on the calendar include the 2nd round of the Fat Les Chipstand Canadian Nationals Series on Sunday, June 23rd, the O’ Canada 100 Super DIRTcar Big Block Series on Sunday, June 30th, the Flat Track Canada Nationals Championship Series on Sunday, August 3rd and the Race for the Cure 150 on Thursday, August 22nd.
The Speedway has undergone significant enhancements in recent years with new seating and equipment along with other improvements. It’s a good sign for the thousands who make it a second home – and those who are looking for a new experience.
“It’s like the price of a movie but with us you get a show that’s three hours,” says Mr. Lavergne. “There’s always action on the track. You get your money’s worth.”
