The Cornwall Triathlon Returns!

August 20, 2024

This weekend, lace up your running shoes for the Cornwall Triathlon! Participants from all over will descend on Cornwall on August 24th and 25th . The Cornwall Triathlon first began in 2004, and this year marks its 21th anniversary! The history of the Triathlon race is much older, dating back to September 25th, 1974. Organized by the San Diego Track Club, the Triathlon soon took the running world by storm, becoming an official Olympic event in 2000. As a hallmark community event here in Cornwall, our Triathlon draws competitors from all ages and backgrounds, as well as donating proceeds towards the BGC Cornwall/SDG. A wide variety of events will be raced, including the Triathlon, Sprint Duathlon and 5 km run.

This year, the Triathlon will be raced along the waterfront in downtown Cornwall, on a traffic-free stretch. The swim course will be aided by Cornwall Fire water rescue, kayaks, canoes and lifeguards. Exit from the swim course is onto a rubber mat shore, then a short incline to the run into transition. The river’s temperature is typically 21-22 degrees Celsius (70-72 degrees Fahrenheit) and allows for wetsuits in all events. The cycling course will be held along a closed 10 km stretch of Cornwall’s downtown core. The course will head east out of transition to a turn around near Boundary Road. Heading west, participants enter into the Nav Canada Training Institute up and down the main driveway. Once back on Montreal Road, they will continue to head west to a left turn on Marlborough St. This slight downhill is the fastest part of the course and winds through Cornwall’s historical Cotton Mill district before returning to Montreal Road for the eastward ride back to the transition area. The Try-A-Tri race will complete 1 loop, the Sprint Tri and Du will complete 2 loops and the Olympic distance competitors will complete 4 loops. The run will be held on the beautiful recreational path along the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The run course is slightly rolling. The first Sprint Duathlon run will head west along the bike course on an out-and-back route. The first Sprint Duathlon run will enter transition in the same manner as the bike-in. After the bike portion has been completed all runs head east along the recreational path. The Try-A-Tri race will complete 1 loop of a 2.5km course, The Sprint Tri/Du will complete 2 loops of the course and the Olympic distance racers will complete 4 loops. The 5K Race will begin on the road adjacent to the finish arch, and then merge onto the recreation path, where it will follow the same course as the Sprint Triathlon and Sprint Duathlon, completing 2 loops and then back to the finish.

The Children’s Triathlon will take place on Saturday, August 24th ,and the Adult Triathlon and events will be held on Sunday, August 25th. Each participant will receive a swim cap and bike bottle upon their arrival at the finish line, as well as free photos provided by volunteer photographers. The photos will be available to download off the Cornwall Triathlon website. A limited number of finisher medals and shirts will be available for purchase onsite. For athletes that finish in the top 3 in their age group, special prizes will be awarded! This year, prize money will be awarded to the overall top finishers in the Olympic Triathlon, Sprint Triathlon, and Sprint Duathlon. Special gift cards will be presented to the overall finishers of the Try-a-Tri and 5K Run. Proceeds will support BGC Cornwall/SDG, to positively impact the lives of children and youth in our area.
