The Island Adventure Awaits: Long Sault Parkway Opens April 17

Cornwall, ON – The St. Lawrence Parks Commission (SLPC) is pleased to announce that the iconic Long Sault Parkway will officially open for the 2026 season at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 17.

As one of Eastern Ontario’s most scenic destinations, the Parkway offers a 10-kilometre journey across 11 islands connected by a winding causeway. Whether travelling by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot, visitors are treated to a unique blend of natural beauty and a powerful “behind-the-scenes” look at the region’s history.

Originally formed during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the 1950s, the islands of the Parkway were once the hilltops of communities flooded to create the Seaway. Today, the route stands as a place of remembrance closely tied to the story of the Lost Villages, while serving as a premier hub for camping, boating, and world-class scuba diving. To dive deeper into the history and engineering of the Seaway, visitors are encouraged to visit the OPG Saunders Visitor Centre, where interactive displays bring the story of the power project and the region’s transformation to life.

“The Long Sault Parkway is a drive like no other,” says the SLPC. “It offers panoramic views in every direction and serves as a geographic curiosity, featuring a monument on Macdonell Island marking the 45th Parallel—the exact halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole.”

2026 Season: Infrastructure & Revitalization

In 2026, the SLPC is beginning a major infrastructure investment to enhance guest amenities and sustainability. While the Parkway remains open all season, visitors should note the following:

  • Mille Roches Beach & Campground: Closed for the 2026 season for major revitalization (re-opening in 2027).
  • Construction: Brief single-lane delays may occur during weekday daytime hours. Travellers are encouraged to allow extra time.
  • Alternative Access: Guests are invited to explore nearby sites, including Woodlands Beach, Crysler Park Beach, and Farran Campground.
