THE LIST: 10 Fun things to do in September
August 26, 2024September means back to school, cooler temperatures, and leaves changing. And it also means one last blast of fun in Cornwall! From large outdoor events to artistic tours, Cornwall has plenty of fun festivals and events on tap for the month of September. Make sure to plan a visit and enjoy some new experiences!
Check out our list below for some great things to do see and do in September and happy exploring!
1. Akwesasne PowWow
Experience a powwow like no other! From Saturday, September 7th – Sunday, September 8th in Lamoureux Park, the Akwesasne PowWow will showcase an amazing lineup of dancers, drummers, and more. Traditional craft and food vendors will be present, selling a wide variety of items, clothing, and snacks!
2. Eastern Ontario Writer’s Festival Workshop & Book Fair
This registration-only event will take place on Saturday, September 7th, at the Cornwall Public Library. Participants will get the chance to listen to a speaker series, and participate in Q&A. From 2:00-4:30, a book festival will be held at the library and is open to the public.
3. Cornwall Culture Fest
Celebrate diversity in Cornwall and SDG Counties at this inclusive event! In Lamoureux Park on Saturday, September 14, cultural diversity will be on full display! Food vendors, dancers, and musicians from all backgrounds will be taking part in this fantastic festival
4. Cline House Gallery “Rural Routes”
The Cline House Gallery strikes again with another amazing art exhibit! “Rural Routes” will be featuring paintings by Stuart McCormick. The opening reception is on Saturday, September 14th, beginning at 1pm. This exhibit will run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am – 4pm, beginning Saturday, September 14th and ending Saturday, October 26th.
5. Shorty Jenkins Classic
Check out the 25th annual Shorty Jenkins Classic, a curling tournament that brings world class curlers to the Cornwall Curling Centre. This curling classic is one of the longest running professional curling events in Canada and features one of the highest combined purses. This tournament runs from September 11-15, so don’t miss out!
6. Eastern Ontario Garlic Festival
On Saturday, September 21st , visit Lamoureux Park to take part in the Eastern Ontario Garlic Festival. Come spend the day alongside vendors, entertainment, and more! Food and drink will be offered by local vendors and farmers ready for you to enjoy.
7. OHL Exhibition Game: Kingston VS. Ottawa
This is for sure an event you won’t want to miss out on. The Ontario Hockey League is returning to the Cornwall Civic Complex for an exhibition Pre-season game on Saturday, September 21st. Buy your tickets now via TicketPro and enjoy an amazing good old ice hockey game while the Ottawa 67’s take on the Kingston Frontenacs and battle ’till the finish. Puck drops at 7pm!
8. Franco Ontarian Day
As one of Ontario’s most bilingual cities, Cornwall has a strong Franco-Ontarian presence. On Wednesday, September 25th, check out the celebrations hosted at Lamoureux Park! There will be activities, live music, and more to see and do.
9. Apples & Art Studio Tour
On Saturday, September 28th and Sunday, September 29th, take part in the Apples & Art Studio Tour, a stunning tour that takes you all over Cornwall and SDG! This experience is a chance to meet artists, to chat, and to see their work in a natural setting. Appreciate art from a variety of mediums such as paint, ink, clay, fine stones, wood, and glass.
10. Aultsville Theatre
This local gem features a wide range of productions in the month of September! The first performance to be hosted at the theatre is We Walk the Line-A Johnny Cash Tribute, on Thursday, September 12. The tribute focuses on the life of the music icon, from his humble beginnings to his rise to stardom. Later on, legendary Latin guitarist Johannes Linstead comes to Aultsville Hall on Saturday, September 14! Through the fusion of Spanish-style guitar with Afro-Cuban, Middle Eastern, and Latin American percussion and instrumentation, Linstead puts on an amazing performance that everyone will adore. On Saturday, September 21, enjoy a live original folk musical! Tom Thomson’s wake features a lively cast, amazing song and dance, and stunning imagery of Tom Thomson and other Group of 7 works, courtesy of the Art Gallery of Ontario.
