Tourism Development Fund invests $100,000 in future arts centre
March 3, 2020The Tourism Development Corporation of Cornwall (TDCC) is pleased to announce that the Board of Directors has decided to fund the future Cornwall arts and culture centre in Downtown Cornwall for $25,000 a year for 4 years, for a total investment of $100,000.
“We are convinced that the centre can have a significant beneficial effect on tourism in our area, in addition to being of tremendous significance to the development of our community,” said Etienne Saint-Aubin, TDCC Chair.
The arts centre had applied for funding through the Tourism Development Fund application process. The application was reviewed by the Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors before coming to a final funding decision. Due to the significant impact the centre can have on the community, the board agreed it would be beneficial to award beyond the normal funding threshold of $20,000.
Along with the substantial funding, the TDCC board is also requesting that the City of Cornwall and the arts centre consider establishing an arts and culture coordinator position, as part of its planning for the Centre.
“We consider establishing this position to be crucial to the centre’s success, and for a healthy relationship with essential existing facilities such as Aultsville Theatre,” added Saint-Aubin.
The TDCC hopes that this contribution will help the centre to be up and running sooner and looks forward to witnessing the positive impact of the centre on the City.
The former Bank of Montreal building in Downtown Cornwall was purchased by the City of Cornwall in 2018 with a goal of transforming it into an arts and culture centre. A grassroots fundraising campaign has been underway to raise funds for the project. To date, with the new investment from the Tourism Development Fund, over $660,000 has been raised.

About the Tourism Development Fund
The Cornwall Tourism Development Fund was established in 2019 to support efforts to grow tourism activity in the City of Cornwall.
The fund has two streams:
– The Festivals and Special Events Stream provides support to festivals (new or existing), conferences, major sporting events and other events that demonstrate the capacity to attract a significant number of visitors to Cornwall.
– The Attractions and Tourism Product Development Stream provides support for enhancements to or the creation of new infrastructure, business, product offering or facility that will result in a measurable improvement to the tourism offering in Cornwall.
Applications are reviewed by an Advisory Committee made up of community stakeholders who will make recommendations to the Board of Directors of the Tourism Development Corporation of Cornwall.
