Waterfest returns this Saturday to Cornwall Canal
August 8, 2018One of Cornwall’s favourite summer events returns this Saturday to the Cornwall Canal.
Cornwall Waterfest is back with a full day of festivities, including food, live entertainment and, of course, dragon boats. It’s all in support of a good cause – Hospice Cornwall.
This year’s event will feature 22 teams paddling on the historic Canal, including several teams from outside of Cornwall. The event runs from 8 am to 5 pm at the Cornwall Canal in the area of Power Dam Drive and Second Street West.
“Our registration has almost tripled from last year,” said Lea Emard, one of the event organizers. “We’re expecting upwards of 500 participants along with many more spectators.”
The teams will be racing dragon boats on the 250-metre course for a number of different awards in community, sport/competitive and women’s divisions as well as fastest time of the day.
The ancient vessels are steered up the canal by teams of paddlers working in rhythm with each other and a drummer at the bow. It’s an amazing sight for spectators and a unique experience for participants as well.
It won’t be the only sight for spectators to enjoy. In addition to the dragon boat races, there will also be live entertainment, food and artisan vendors, demonstrations and much more to enjoy.
