22nd Annual Family Fishing Day at Gray’s Creek Conservation AreaJune 24, 2023
The Raisin Region Conservation Authority’s (RRCA) Family Fishing Day returns to Gray’s Creek Conservation Area on Friday, July 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event lets young anglers and their families try their hand at catching fish while also enjoying a barbecue and a chance to win several prizes through a friendly fishing competition. A fishing licence is not required, as the event takes place during Ontario’s licence-free fishing week.
“This popular RRCA community event is a fun way for families to learn about our region’s native fish species, practice proper fishing techniques, and spend quality time in nature,” says Claudia Munafo, RRCA’s Administrative and Outreach Assistant.
Over a hundred anglers of all skill levels typically join the event. While all ages are welcome, anglers 16 and under will have a chance to win prizes awarded for several categories, including biggest fish, smallest fish, and most invasive species caught. RRCA staff will be on hand to help measure, weigh, and identify the day’s catches. Participants are strongly encouraged to observe proper fishing and water safety practices. For those without fishing equipment, the RRCA will be lending out rods, hooks, bobbers, and bait, while
“RRCA’s participation in the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters’ TackleShare fishing equipment loaning program, coupled with the province’s licence-free fishing week, is a great way to introduce families to this popular sport,” says Munafo. “We’re also grateful to Ontario Power Generation, Cardinal & Son Wholesale Meat, and Canadian Tire for supporting this event. This year, we will again be joined by staff from the River Institute who will share their expertise on local fish species with participants through
interactive displays and activities.”
