The Black Jack
Cornwall’s connection to the St. Lawrence River will be celebrated on Saturday, July 21st with a brand-new event, the Great River Day.
The event will be held at Cornwall Harbour and the highlight will be a visit from the tall ship Black Jack. Built in the style of a traditional 18th century tall ship, the Black Jack is sure to please both the young and young at heart.
It will be docked at Cornwall Harbour and residents will have a chance to examine the 87-foot vessel up close.
“It should be a lot of fun,” said Karen Cooper of the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences, which is organizing the event. “People will be able to go on board and take pictures. Who doesn’t want to be on a tall ship?”
The new event stemmed from last year’s visit by the Canada C3, a cross-country expedition held as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
“It was a huge success,” said Mrs. Cooper. “It was great to have the C3 at the Harbour and so many people turned out to see it.”
The hope is Great River Day will build on that visit by the C3 and become a new tradition at the Harbour for years to come.
“This is going to be a huge celebration of the river,” said Mrs. Cooper.
In addition to the tall ship visit, there will also be interactive displays and exhibits and other activities at the Harbour.
The Black Jack is operated by the Ottawa-based youth charity Bytown Brigantine and it is used for summer camps and other events.

Le Black Jack
Le lien de Cornwall avec le fleuve Saint-Laurent sera célébré le samedi 21 juillet avec un tout nouvel événement, soit Great River Day.
Cet événement se déroulera au Port de Cornwall et le moment fort sera la visite du grand voilier Black Jack. Construit dans le style classique des grands voiliers du XVIIIe siècle, le Black Jack a de quoi plaire aux jeunes et aux jeunes de cœur.
Il sera mis à quai au Port de Cornwall et les résidents auront l’occasion d’examiner le voilier de 87 pieds de près.
« Ça promet d’être très amusant », a déclaré Karen Cooper de l’Institut des sciences environnementales du fleuve Saint-Laurent, qui organise l’événement. « Les gens pourront monter à bord et prendre des photos. Qui ne veut pas se trouver sur un grand voilier? »
Le nouvel événement découle de la visite, l’année dernière, de Canada C3, une expédition à travers le pays réalisée dans le cadre des célébrations du 150e anniversaire du Canada.
« L’événement s’est avéré un franc succès », a affirmé Mme Cooper. « Nous avons été emballés d’accueillir l’expédition C3 au Port et un grand nombre de gens sont venus la rencontrer. »
On espère que Great River Day misera sur cette visite par l’expédition C3 et deviendra une nouvelle tradition au Port pour de nombreuses années à venir.
« Il s’agira d’une très grande célébration du fleuve », a mentionné Mme Cooper.
En plus de la visite du grand voilier, il y aura des présentations et expositions interactives et d’autres activités au Port.
Le Black Jack est exploité par l’organisme caritatif pour la jeunesse Bytown Brigantine d’Ottawa et il est utilisé lors de camps d’été et autres événements.
