Shorty Jenkins Classic postponed to 2021
May 12, 2020Following an early end to the 2019-20 curling season and the uncertainly of the current pandemic situation, organizers of AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic have decided to cancel the 2020 event and return in 2021.
The decision was made by the organizing committee and is in the best interest of local sponsors, fans, volunteers, and the curlers.
“We felt that it was in the best interests of the fans, volunteers, curlers, and our major sponsors, AMJ Campbell, Jet Ice, VIA Rail , Choose Cornwall and the Cornwall Curling Centre to postpone for one year,” said Gord McCrady Jr., founder and co-chair of the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic. “We look forward to the 25th Anniversary the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic presented by Jet Ice, VIA Rail and Choose Cornwall in September 2021.”
The AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic recognizes and values the partnership of many great sponsors that support the community by making the event possible and bringing the best curling teams from around the world to Cornwall every September.
“AMJ CAMPBELL has been the proud title sponsor of the Shorty Jenkins Classic for the past 13 years and we look forward to continuing our support of the teams and events when we get back on the ice again and get to watch and play the sport we love,” said Denis Cordick, Vice President Brand Marketing & Partnerships. “We fully understand and support the decision to cancel the 2020 Shorty – it is so unfortunate but the right thing to do under the circumstances. We can’t wait to be involved in 2021!”
“Jet Ice has been a proud presenting sponsor of the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic since 1996 when Shorty Jenkins and Gord McCrady Jr. founded the event,” added Deborah Wilcox, President of Jet Ice. “We fully support the difficult decision made my Gord and his committee to cancel the 2020 Shorty – we can’t wait to be involved in the 25th Anniversary of the Shorty in 2021 which will be the best one yet!”
The 2019 edition of the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic featured John Epping and Brad Jacobs in the men’s final, where the Toronto-based Epping went on to win 5-3 to capture his fourth Shorty title. Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones won the women’s final, defeating Tracy Fleury 6-4 to win her first Shorty title.
“We’re very disappointed to hear the Shorty Jenkins Classic has been postponed but understand and support the decision Gord and his committee have made,” said Epping. “We always look forward to playing in the Shorty and can’t wait to be back in 2021.”
Jennifer Jones echoed Epping’s comments.
“We thoroughly enjoyed our first time competing at the Shorty Jenkins Classic and are saddened by the postponement, but we know that it will come back stronger than ever,” Jones said. “We’re looking forward to a time when we can put these concerns behind us and focus on curling again.”
The AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic will return in September 2021 celebrating the 25th AMJ Shorty Jenkins Classic.
